Saint Venant’s Principle - Slides

Saint Venant’s Principle

  • Saint Venant’s principle if complex load distribution is replaced by simpler one (with same resultant force and moment):
    • Near load application region: stress field can be very different
    • Far away from application region: stress field is unchanged
  • This principle can be used to simplify problems with complex loads

  • Statically equivalent means load systems have same force resultant and same moment result

  • At distance comparable to width of the bar , stress is nearly uniform
    • We must move away from loaded region than largest dimension
  • in equation is equal to the distance away from where load applied
