Saint Venant’s Principle

• Saint Venant’s principle $-$ if complex load distribution is replaced by simpler one (with same resultant force and moment):
  • Near load application region: stress field can be very different
  • Far away from application region: stress field is unchanged
• This principle can be used to simplify problems with complex loads

• Statically equivalent means load systems have same force resultant and same moment result

$\sigma =\frac{P}{bt}$

• At distance comparable to width of the bar $b$, stress is nearly uniform
  • We must move away from loaded region $\ge$ than largest dimension
• $b$ in equation is equal to the distance away from where load applied
