Assessments

  • Quizzes - 30%
    • Top 5/7 go towards final mark
  • Lab Reports - 20%
    • 5 reports in total, due within one week of lab
  • Final Exam - 50%

What is Solid Mechanics About?

  • Study of deformable solid bodies materials that change shape or volume when subjected to external forces
  • It is a branch of continuum mechanics which models behaviour of solids and fluids as continuous matter rather than discrete particles

Solid mechanics is the study of the relationship between the loads applied to a body and the stress and strain (deformation) caused by the internal loads within the body

Purpose: to design safely any structure for strength and serviceability
